MUMBAI: The attack on actor Gauhar Khan in Film city on Sunday during a reality. Television shoot has snowballed into a controversy with right-wing Hindu groups. Demanding a public protest while many Bollywood stars have expressed support for Khan on social media.
Khan was slapped by a youngster Akil Malik who objected to her dress. The Mumbai Police arrested Malik on Monday and charged him with violence and molestation under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code. "Being a Muslim, Gauhar should not have worn such a short dress," Malik was heard saying as police took him into Custody.
Meanwhile, Bollywood threw its weight behind the actor. Actor-director Farhan Akhtar tweeted saying "Dearest natural selection, please help us out-evolve morons like the one who slapped Gau(a)har Khan. Sincerely..."
Director Madhur Bhandarkar said, "Shocked to hear that Gau (a)har Khan got slapped for alleged indecency. Absurdity just touched a new level. Disgusting and highly condemnable." Television presenter Mini Mathur described the incident as "absolutely disgusting".
Many right-wing Hindu groups, which are active on cyber space, took up the issue, demanding a public protest against the incident. "Why are all the intellectuals who targeted Pramod Muthalik of Sriram Sene now quiet? This is a shocking incident and everyone must come out to protest. But it is one rule for Hindus and another for other communities. Fanatics from all communities must be opposed," said a post by a right-wing blogger.
The posts went viral and were shared by hundreds of their followers. Some political activists responded to the post by saying that both Muthalik and people like Malik deserve to be condemned and acts of violence against women must be prevented.
