Rajkummar Rao’s Newton has finally hit the theatres and has been receiving positive reviews for the brilliant act put up by the National Award-winning actor and now the movie is going to Oscars.
The news came from the actor Rajkummar Rao himself, who is ecstatic over such a massive feat. He took to his social media account and shared the happy news with all his fans. He wrote, “Very happy to share this news that #NEWTON is India’s official entry to the #OSCARS this year. Congratulations team.”
The film revolves around a government clerk who tries to conduct fair voting on an election day amid the fear of guerrilla attacks and apathy of security forces.
Filmmaker Aanand L Rai, who joined hands with producer Manish Mundra of Drishyam Films to present Rajkummar Rao starrer Newton, got emotional about Oscar entry. He also tweeted on social media, “While typing this tweet I feel so emotional YES #NEWTON is India’s official entry to OSCARS this year. So proud @Amit_Masurkar @RajkummarRao”
Newton is a black comedy film directed by Amit V Masurkar and produced by Drishyam Films; the film is Masurkar’s second feature after his debut film, the slacker comedy independent film Sulemani Keeda in 2013.
Newton had its world premiere in the Forum section of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival and is set to have its North American premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival where it screens in the International Narrative Competition section.
It is selected as the Indian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards.
The movie also stars Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil, Raghubir and Sanjay Mishra in lead roles.
